CenPEG and IBON sponsor roundtable
discussion on food security


The Center for People Empowerment in Governance (CenPEG), in cooperation with IBON Foundation held a rountable discussion (rtd) on Food Security, Nutrition and Health in the Philippines last March 31, 2008, 1-4 p.m. at the IBON Foundation conference room in Quezon City.

The RTD was held to tackle the issue of rice crisis and food security in the country. Invited as guest speaker was Prof. Joop van Raaij of the Wageningen University in the Netherlands Cecilia Florencio, Professor Emeritus and former Dean, UP College of Home Economics ; Sonny Africa, Research Head, IBON Foundation, Inc.; and Dr. Joseph N. Carabeo of the Community Medicine Foundation, as reactors.

A nutritionist by training, Prof. van Raaij received his MSc and PhD degrees at Wageningen University in The Netherlands. He has supervised more than 120 MSc students and PhD fellows with their nutrition research projects in the Philippines, India, Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, South Africa, and The Netherlands. An associate professor at Wageningen University and senior scientist at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in The Netherlands, he advises the Dutch government, the European Commission, and WHO Europe on issues related to nutrition and health. Dr. van Raaij has written more than 60 scientific publications.
